Job Description
The Country Manager is critical to steering the mission to address ultra-poverty in last-mile communities in Uganda through innovative, impactful, and sustainable development initiatives. This role will oversee all aspects of our operations in Uganda, & ensure they align with our global strategy while being tailored to meet local needs.
The Country Manager will be responsible for building, maintaining, and leading strong multidisciplinary teams across departments and developing a robust operational framework that supports delivering high-impact and resource-efficient programs. You will create an organizational culture aligned with our values, build systems and processes to support the organization's growth, ensure smooth day-to-day operations, and support teams across departments.
The Country Manager will also serve as a key liaison between our client and various stakeholders, including local, global, regional, and other country teams, government entities, non-governmental organizations, community leaders, and donors. This role requires a blend of strategic foresight, operational expertise, and strong leadership with demonstrated experience in building systems, processes, and teams in a growth environment.
Duties and Responsibilities
Operational Leadership and Management:
Oversee day-to-day operations and ensure operational coherence and efficiency.
Ensure on-time and effective delivery of all country plans and budgets.
Implement strategies that enhance productivity and ensure project deliverables meet quality standards.
Identify and manage risks, ensuring proactive risk mitigation measures and appropriate policies and procedures are in place.
Ensure global policies are adapted to the country context as appropriate.
Contribute as a member of the Global and Regional leadership teams to support organizational effectiveness and development.
Ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements in Uganda.
Team Leadership and Development:
Provide strong strategic leadership to the country team, promoting an organizational culture that is supportive, empowering, and collaborative
Provide guidance and support to department heads, ensuring they are aligned with organizational goals.
Foster a culture of continuous improvement, professional growth, and development within the team.
Strategic Planning and Execution:
Develop and deliver country strategic plans that align with our clients vision, mission, and global strategy.
Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of strategies, making adjustments as necessary.
Stakeholder Management and Partnerships:
Build and maintain strong relationships with local government bodies, community leaders, NGOs, and other partners.
Represent our client in strategic meetings, ensuring that our clients mission and values are communicated effectively.
Reporting and Communication:
Provide regular updates to the Regional and Global teams about progress, challenges, and opportunities. Ensure a high level of accountability to internal and external stakeholders.
Ensure that all reporting requirements to internal and external stakeholders are met promptly and accurately.
Build strong internal communication processes and systems across districts, regions, and our clients offices.
Qualification, Experiences and Competencies
Degree in International Development, Public Administration, Business Administration, Marketing, or a related field. A Master’s degree will be an asset.
Minimum of 15 years experience in international development, including senior management experience with a proven track in a similar role managing multi-disciplinary teams.
A strong understanding of data-informed development and impact assessment.
Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, change management, and development of policies, processes, and systems.
Exceptional strategic thinking and planning abilities with demonstrated ability to lead innovation within program development and implementation.
Excellent communication (oral & written) and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels.
Proven leadership and team management experience, with the ability to inspire and motivate staff towards common goals.
Results-oriented mindset with a track record of achieving targets and driving positive outcomes.
Ability to plan own work set priorities, and deliver under pressure in the face of competing demands.
Willingness to travel locally in countries of operations as needed.
