Job Description

By fulfilling these duties and meeting these requirements, a Dairy Maintenance Technician ensures that dairy processing operations run smoothly, efficiently, and safely, contributing to the overall success of the dairy production process.

Duties and Responsibilities

Equipment Maintenance and Repair

Preventive Maintenance

  • Conducting regular inspections and preventive maintenance on dairy processing equipment.

  • Lubricating, cleaning, and adjusting machinery to ensure optimal performance.

  • Maintaining records of maintenance activities and schedules.


Troubleshooting and Repair

  • Diagnosing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues in dairy equipment.

  • Performing repairs and replacements of faulty parts.

  • Utilizing diagnostic tools and equipment to identify problems.


Operational Support

Facility Maintenance

  • Ensuring the maintenance of dairy facility infrastructure, including HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems.

  • Conducting routine checks on refrigeration systems and ensuring proper temperature control.


Production Support

  • Assisting in the setup and calibration of equipment for production runs.

  • Collaborating with production staff to minimize downtime and ensure efficient operations.

  • Supporting the installation and commissioning of new equipment.



Safety and Compliance

Health and Safety

  • Adhering to safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment.

  • Conducting risk assessments and implementing corrective actions to mitigate hazards.

  • Ensuring compliance with OSHA and other regulatory standards.


Sanitation and Hygiene

  • Maintaining high standards of cleanliness and hygiene in the dairy processing area.

  • Ensuring equipment and facilities meet food safety regulations and standards.

  • Participating in regular sanitation procedures and inspections.


Documentation and Reporting

Record Keeping

  • Maintaining accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and equipment performance.

  • Documenting issues and solutions to build a knowledge base for future reference.


Reporting

  • Reporting maintenance activities and equipment status to supervisors and management.

  • Providing feedback and recommendations for improving equipment performance and reliability.

Qualification, Experiences and Competencies

Education and Experience

Educational Background

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Technical or vocational training in mechanical, electrical, or industrial maintenance is preferred.


Experience

  • Previous experience in equipment maintenance, preferably in a dairy or food processing environment.

  • Experience with dairy-specific equipment such as pasteurizers, homogenizers, separators, and refrigeration systems.


Technical Skills

  • Mechanical and Electrical Proficiency

  • Strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.

  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.


Diagnostic and Troubleshooting Skills

  • Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and equipment.

  • Strong problem-solving skills to identify and resolve equipment issues efficiently.


Personal Attributes and Abilities

Attention to Detail

  • Meticulous attention to detail to ensure precise maintenance and repair work.

  • Ability to identify potential issues before they become major problems.


Physical Stamina

  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy objects and standing for long periods.

  • Comfort working in various environmental conditions, such as cold storage areas.


Communication and Teamwork

Communication Skills

  • Effective communication skills to work collaboratively with production staff and management.

  • Ability to clearly document and report maintenance activities.


Teamwork

  • Strong interpersonal skills to work as part of a maintenance team.

  • Willingness to support colleagues and share knowledge.


Certifications and Training

Certifications

  • Relevant certifications in mechanical, electrical, or industrial maintenance are advantageous.

  • Certification in refrigeration or HVAC systems can be beneficial.
