Job Description
InfoNile is seeking a Data and Editorial Associate based in Uganda to help edit stories working with journalists across the Nile Basin countries, source and visualise data for stories, support in coordinating InfoNile journalists capacity building programs, and monitor the impact of InfoNile/Water Journalists Africa programs. Tasks will include editing and occasionally producing stories, coordinating data and science journalism story grant and training programs, sourcing and visualising scientific data for stories, managing the creation of in-depth data journalism projects involving journalists in different countries, and conducting data-based M&E to analyze the impact of these programs. This position is based in Kampala, Uganda. This is an entry level position with potential opportunities for growth.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provide editorial support to improve stories/multimedia content on themes of water and environment in Uganda and across the Nile Basin, working with journalists across the region.
Source, analyse and visualise data for stories and projects from various credible sources, including scientific studies;
Pitch and produce occasional stories/multimedia content on themes of water and environment in Uganda and across the Nile Basin.
Help coordinate InfoNile programs alongside the Programs and Data Officer, the Head of Programs and Strategy and the rest of the team, including trainings for journalists and story grant programs - from strategic ideation stage to managing logistics and necessary accountabilities, for instance, of inter-country workshops, and develop ideas for new programs in accordance with the strategic plan;
Support in publishing stories on the website and producing communications materials; • Coordinate the creation of in-depth multimedia data journalism projects involving journalists in different countries;
Support in conducting data and science journalism trainings;
Develop and implement monitoring and evaluation strategies to track the reach and impact of programs
Work with the Programs and Data Officer, Head of Programs and Strategy and the Directors to support in the development of a comprehensive M&E plan and systems
Create and implement relevant tools such as surveys and other strategies to measure impact
Create and manage databases that track Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) • Analyze data and report KPIs
Support internal and external programs reports by incorporating M&E analysis.
Support in securing partnerships with media houses, organizations and journalists in the region
Market InfoNile products and services to secure clients and business opportunities
Qualification, Experiences and Competencies
Residency in Uganda
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (such as journalism/communications, development communications, and/or environmental science/policy)
Experience in journalism and/or science communication, or with journalists and the media (preferred)
Experience coordinating programs for NGOs (preferred)
Experience working on monitoring and evaluation systems (preferred)
Experience developing programs and writing project proposals (preferred)
Experience and/or demonstrated interest analysing and visualising data
Networks with media houses and journalists in the region
Knowledge, experience and interest in issues of water and the environment in the Nile Basin
Experience in multimedia and social media content production (added advantage)
Business or marketing experience (added advantage)
Be a strong self-starter and able to work independently and with self-initiative
Detail-oriented and strong critical thinking skills
Basic skills in data analysis and statistics
Critical and strategic thinking skills
Strong communications and writing skills
Fluence in English
Fluency in at least one other Nile Basin language (Swahili, French, Arabic, Amharic, Kinyarwanda) (preferred)
