Job Description
Project information
SNV is currently in the process of developing a 5-year Livestock project, INCLUDE. The project aims to improve resilient livelihoods for smallholder livestock farmers in Busoga, Rwenzori, Greater Ankole and Kigezi regions. The project targets 75,000 smallholder farms (SHF) in these four subregions. The project will adopt a farming systems approach integrating livestock and crops, having livestock (dairy cattle, sheep, and goats) as an intervention entry point.
To address the above the project will apply the Participatory Integrated Planning (PIP) approach. The PIP approach is an innovative way of transforming small-scale subsistence farm households into more productive and sustainable farms. Changing farmers’ mindsets by motivating them to transform their reality through conscious collective action is at the core of the PIP approach. The project will also support the ongoing school milk program and be supportive to policy actors to developed and implement inclusive and responsive livestock policies and practices.
Job Purpose.
The Driver transports staff, visitors or errands to destination, based on requests and conform safety and traffic regulations, in order to contribute to timely and safely arrival. He/she coordinates fleet management and ensures regular maintenance of vehicles including information on vehicle insurances and taxes.
Duties and Responsibilities
Vehicle operations and Safety
Responsible for the proper use of the organizational vehicle.
Check inventory (e.g. first aid kit, second tire etc.) and status of the vehicle.
Identify any damage and report these to line manager.
Arrange and keep track of periodical service schedule and insurance.
Driving
Drive passengers or deliver errands within the identified areas, while following the traffic regulations, safety instructions.
Comply with the travel arrangements of the passengers and/or delivery requirements.
Technical Maintenance
Regularly check and maintain the vehicle.
Identify technical malfunctions and recommend potential repair alternatives.
Conduct repairs to the vehicles and/or send for repair, in consultation with the supervisor in case of complex and/or costly repair.
Administration
Keep logbook of all driving activities, fuel and any incidents and accidents.
Ensure insurances and taxes of vehicles are up to date
Planning and Coordination
Plan transport routes with line manager.
Contact and contract suppliers and garages for maintenance and services.
Ensure possession of valid driver license while driving SNV Vehicles.
Qualification, Experiences and Competencies
Good report writing skills with proven ability to compile case studies, practice, and policy briefs and (other) documents for learning and sharing.
Computer skills and software applications (email, word processing, spreadsheets, statistical programs).
Skills in teamwork, facilitation, and training.
Sensitive and committed to gender equity and diversity.
Execute activities to support others based on request, like assist in logistic activities, or support in maintenance of building.
Qualifications
UCE Certificate.
Valid driver’s license with Classes A, B, CM, DL.
3-5 years driving experience in a medium sized organization.
Defensive driving experience for risk management.
Knowledge of Ugandan Traffic Laws and regulation.
Effective verbal, presentation and listening communication skills.
Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills.
Ability to maintain composure always.
Computer knowledge is preferred.
Additional requirements
Basic requirements: Basic/intermediate vocational working and thinking level. Clean driving license. Basic experience in fleet management and supporting logistics needs.
