Mildmay Uganda (MUg), formerly Mildmay International in Uganda, is a national Non-Government Organization established in Uganda in 1998 as a Centre of Excellence for provision of comprehensive HIV&AIDS prevention, care, treatment and training services.
Overtime, Mildmay Uganda has evolved and diversified its services specializing in delivery of comprehensive healthcare including Treatment Services; Health Systems Strengthening; Other Complementary Social Services; Health Training and Education; and Research.
Job Description
The position holder will provide overall coordination and strategic leadership of Mildmay Hospital Uganda (MHUg) in line with the Hospital’s vision of being a leading hospital for quality healthcare in Uganda. This role aims to transform the low-patient volume hospital into a profitable, renowned General Hospital distinguished by excellent patient-centered care, expert medical care, and destination medicine. The Hospital Director will contribute to the MUg Group’s agenda for sustainable community health transformation and ensure lasting impacts on the Group’s sustainability.
Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership and Management:
Providing overall leadership and strategic direction to the hospital.
Overseeing day-to-day operations to ensure smooth functioning.
Financial Management:
Managing the hospital's budget, finances, and financial planning.
Ensuring financial sustainability and profitability while maintaining high-quality care.
Human Resources Management:
Recruiting, hiring, and retaining qualified medical and administrative staff.
Overseeing staff training, development, and performance evaluations.
Ensuring compliance with labor laws and regulations.
Patient Care and Safety:
Ensuring high standards of patient care and safety are maintained.
Implementing and monitoring patient safety and quality improvement programs.
Addressing patient complaints and concerns promptly and effectively.
Regulatory Compliance:
Ensuring the hospital complies with all local, state, and federal regulations.
Preparing for and managing inspections, audits, and accreditation processes.
Strategic Planning and Development:
Developing and implementing strategic plans to meet the hospital’s long-term goals.
Identifying opportunities for growth, expansion, and improvement of services.
Community Relations:
Building and maintaining positive relationships with the community, stakeholders, and partners.
Representing the hospital in public forums and community events.
Quality and Performance Improvement:
Implementing quality assurance programs and performance improvement initiatives.
Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of hospital services and making necessary adjustments.
Technology and Infrastructure Management:
Overseeing the adoption and integration of new medical technologies and systems.
Ensuring the hospital's infrastructure and facilities are maintained and updated.
Risk Management:
Identifying and managing risks to the hospital, including financial, operational, and clinical risks.
Developing and implementing risk mitigation strategies.
Policy Development and Implementation:
Developing, implementing, and reviewing hospital policies and procedures.
Ensuring policies align with best practices and regulatory requirements.
Ethical and Legal Oversight:
Ensuring ethical standards are upheld in all hospital operations.
Addressing legal issues and liaising with legal advisors as needed.
Collaboration and Coordination:
Working with medical staff, department heads, and other stakeholders to coordinate services and care.
Facilitating communication and collaboration across departments.
Resource Allocation:
Ensuring efficient and effective allocation of resources, including staffing, equipment, and supplies.
Managing procurement processes to meet the hospital’s needs.
Emergency Preparedness:
Developing and implementing emergency response plans and protocols.
Ensuring the hospital is prepared to handle emergencies and disasters effectively.
Qualification, Experiences and Competencies
MBChB, plus Master’s degree in a medical-related subject/ Master of Business Administration (and related Health Business Master) and registered with the relevant professional body/council. A qualification in Business Management will be an added advantage.
We are looking for a person with a total of 8 years of work experience, with at least 3 years of relevant senior management experience; Proven track record in turning around underperforming healthcare facilities;
Strong hospital business acumen with financial management skills.
S/he must have Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills;
In-depth knowledge of healthcare regulations, standards, and best practices;
Ability to work effectively with diverse groups, including medical professionals, staff, patients, and external stakeholders and experience working in developing countries.
