Job Description

Makerere University Walter Reed Project (MUWRP) is a non-profit biomedical research organization, whose mission is to mitigate disease threats through quality research, health care and disease surveillance. MUWRP was established in 2002 by a Memorandum of Agreement between The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine, Inc. (HJF) and Makerere University (Mak) undertake medical research to test HIV vaccines. Over the years, MUWRP's portfolio has progressively expanded to include vaccine research for Ebola and Marburg viruses, Emerging Infectious Diseases Program (EIDP) for surveillance of influenza and influenza-like viruses and other emerging infections in humans and animals; also, a PEPFAR funded program in HIV treatment, care and prevention in the districts of Kayunga, Mukono, Buvuma, Buikwe, Luwero, Nakasongola. Additionally. MUWRP seeks to fill the following position.
Contract Tenure: 1 year with a possibility of extension subject to the needs of the Organization

Duties and Responsibilities

Sample Handling and Preparation

  • Sample Collection: Receiving and labeling samples accurately upon arrival.

  • Sample Preparation: Preparing samples for testing, which may include centrifugation, pipetting, and diluting samples.

Conducting Tests and Experiments

  • Test Execution: Performing routine and specialized tests on samples using appropriate laboratory techniques and equipment.

  • Quality Control: Implementing and following quality control procedures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results.

  • Data Recording: Accurately recording test results and observations in laboratory information management systems (LIMS).

Equipment Maintenance and Calibration

  • Equipment Operation: Operating and maintaining laboratory equipment, such as microscopes, spectrophotometers, and centrifuges.

  • Calibration: Regularly calibrating instruments to maintain accuracy and reliability.

  • Troubleshooting: Diagnosing and resolving equipment malfunctions and ensuring minimal downtime.

Safety and Compliance

  • Safety Protocols: Adhering to safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to laboratory operations.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Record Keeping: Maintaining accurate and detailed records of all tests conducted, including methodologies and results.

  • Reporting: Preparing and submitting reports summarizing test results and findings to senior laboratory staff or management.

Inventory Management

  • Supplies Management: Monitoring and managing laboratory supplies and reagents, ensuring that stock levels are adequate.

  • Ordering Supplies: Placing orders for new supplies and ensuring timely restocking to avoid interruptions in laboratory operations.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Team Coordination: Collaborating with other laboratory technicians and scientists to ensure smooth workflow and accurate results.

  • Client Interaction: Communicating with clients or healthcare professionals regarding sample status, test results, and any issues that may arise.

Qualification, Experiences and Competencies

Educational Requirements

  • Degree: An associate or bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science, biology, chemistry, or a related field.

  • Certifications: Certification by a recognized professional body, such as the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), may be required or preferred.

Professional Experience

  • Laboratory Experience: Previous experience working in a laboratory setting, particularly in a high-volume or hub laboratory, is often required.

  • Specialized Knowledge: Experience with specialized tests and advanced laboratory techniques can be advantageous.

Skills and Competencies

  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in laboratory techniques and the use of laboratory equipment.

  • Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy and attention to detail in performing tests and recording results.

  • Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot equipment issues and interpret test results.

  • Computer Proficiency: Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and standard office software.

  • Organizational Skills: Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.

  • Communication Skills: Good verbal and written communication skills for reporting results and collaborating with team members.

  • Laboratory Procedures: In-depth knowledge of laboratory procedures, safety protocols, and quality control standards.

  • Scientific Principles: Understanding of scientific principles underlying laboratory tests and experiments.

  • Regulatory Standards: Awareness of relevant regulatory standards and compliance requirements for laboratory operations.
