Job Description
Light for the world in partnership with Mastercard Foundation associate program and Uganda Breweries Limited are offering a 12 months paid work placement to graduates with disabilities in Uganda.
Duties and Responsibilities
Legal Research:
Case Law and Statutes: Conducting research on relevant case law, statutes, regulations, and legal articles.
Legal Precedents: Identifying and summarizing legal precedents that apply to specific cases.
Document Preparation:
Drafting Legal Documents: Preparing legal documents such as briefs, pleadings, affidavits, contracts, and discovery requests.
Correspondence: Drafting and responding to legal correspondence under the supervision of an attorney.
Case Management:
Organizing Files: Maintaining and organizing case files, ensuring all documents are properly filed and accessible.
Tracking Deadlines: Monitoring and managing deadlines for filing documents and other critical case dates.
Client Interaction:
Client Communication:C
onducting interviews with clients and witnesses to gather information relevant to cases.
Administrative Support:
Scheduling: Managing attorneys' schedules, including coordinating meetings, hearings, and court appearances.
Billing: Assisting with billing and invoicing for legal services rendered.
Court Filings:
Submitting Documents: Filing legal documents with courts and other agencies, both electronically and in person.
Court Preparations: Preparing and organizing exhibits and evidence for court presentations.
Case Analysis:
Reviewing Case Materials: Analyzing case materials and preparing summaries or reports for attorneys.
Evidence Management: Organizing and managing evidence, ensuring its integrity and availability for trial.
Assisting During Trials:
Trial Preparation: Assisting in the preparation for trials, hearings, and depositions.
Courtroom Support: Providing support to attorneys during court proceedings, such as managing exhibits and taking notes.
Qualification, Experiences and Competencies
Associate’s Degree: Most positions require at least an associate’s degree in paralegal studies or a related field.
Bachelor’s Degree: Some employers prefer candidates with a bachelor’s degree.
Paralegal Certificate: Completing a paralegal certificate program approved by the American Bar Association (ABA) can be advantageous.
Skills:
Research Skills: Proficiency in legal research and using legal databases such as LexisNexis and Westlaw.
Writing Skills: Strong writing skills for drafting legal documents and correspondence.
Organizational Skills: Excellent organizational abilities to manage case files and track important deadlines.
Attention to Detail: High attention to detail to ensure accuracy in legal documents and filings.
Communication Skills: Effective verbal and written communication skills for interacting with clients, witnesses, and court personnel.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in using legal software, office applications, and document management systems.
Certification (Optional but Beneficial):
Certified Paralegal (CP): Offered by the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA).
Advanced Certified Paralegal (ACP): Also offered by NALA, for specialized areas of law.
Professional Paralegal (PP): Offered by the National Association of Legal Secretaries (NALS).
Registered Paralegal (RP): Offered by the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA).
Experience:
Internships/Externships: Gaining practical experience through internships or externships during or after educational programs.
On-the-Job Training: Entry-level positions may provide on-the-job training under the supervision of experienced paralegals or attorneys.
Ethical Standards:
Confidentiality: Adhering to strict ethical standards and maintaining client confidentiality.
Professional Conduct: Demonstrating professionalism and integrity in all interactions and tasks.
