Job Description
Kabale University is a Public University pursuant to Statutory Instrument No. 36 of 16th July 2015 under The Universities and other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 (as amended)
Applications are invited from suitably qualified and interested candidates for the following post:
Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching:
Course Delivery: Teach undergraduate and postgraduate law courses, including lectures, seminars, and tutorials on subjects such as constitutional law, criminal law, contract law, international law, and others.
Curriculum Development: Develop and update course materials, including syllabi, reading lists, case studies, and examinations.
Student Assessment: Evaluate and assess students' performance through assignments, exams, moot courts, and other forms of assessment.
Advising: Provide academic advising and mentorship to students, assisting them with course selections, career planning, and research projects.
Skill Development: Facilitate the development of critical legal skills such as legal writing, reasoning, and argumentation through practical exercises and interactive teaching methods.
Research:
Original Research: Conduct independent and collaborative research in areas of legal scholarship, aiming to contribute to academic knowledge and influence legal practice and policy.
Publications: Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals, books, and other scholarly outlets.
Funding: Apply for and secure research funding through grants and fellowships.
Conference Participation: Present research at national and international conferences, seminars, and workshops.
Student Research Supervision: Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students in their research projects, theses, and dissertations.
Service and Administration:
Committee Work: Serve on departmental, faculty, and university committees, contributing to the governance and administration of the institution.
Program Development: Participate in the development and review of academic programs and policies.
Outreach: Engage in community service and outreach activities, including public lectures, legal clinics, and partnerships with legal organizations and practitioners.
Professional Development: Stay current with developments in legal education and practice through continuous professional development.
Qualification, Experiences and Competencies
Educational Qualifications:
Law Degree: A primary law degree (LLB or equivalent) is essential.
Postgraduate Degree: An LLM (Master of Laws) or equivalent postgraduate qualification is typically required. A Doctoral degree (PhD or SJD) in Law is often preferred.
Professional Experience:
Teaching Experience: Previous teaching experience at the undergraduate or postgraduate level is highly desirable.
Legal Practice: Practical experience in the legal field, including work as a practicing lawyer, judge, or legal consultant, is beneficial.
Research Experience: Demonstrated research experience with a strong publication record in reputable legal journals.
Skills and Competencies:
Legal Knowledge: Deep understanding of legal principles, theories, and practices across various areas of law.
Teaching Skills: Excellent teaching and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts clearly and engagingly.
Research Skills: Proficiency in conducting legal research, including qualitative and quantitative methodologies.
Critical Thinking: Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
Technology Proficiency: Familiarity with legal research databases, educational technologies, and digital tools for teaching and research.
Organizational Skills: Strong organizational and administrative abilities.
Licenses and Certifications:
Bar Admission: Membership in a bar association or law society is often preferred, especially for courses related to practical legal skills and ethics.
