Job Description

The role of a Protection Officer (Legal) involves ensuring the protection of individuals’ rights and providing legal support in contexts such as human rights organizations, governmental bodies, or non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Duties and Responsibilities

Legal Support and Advice:

  • Provide legal advice and support to individuals and organizations on protection issues.

  • Interpret and apply relevant laws, regulations, and policies to specific cases.

  • Draft and review legal documents, including contracts, agreements, and case reports.


Case Management:

  • Assist in the identification, assessment, and management of protection cases.

  • Conduct interviews and gather evidence from clients to support their cases.

  • Develop and implement protection strategies and action plans.


Advocacy and Representation:

  • Represent clients in legal proceedings, including court appearances, mediation, and negotiations.

  • Advocate for clients’ rights and interests with authorities, organizations, and other stakeholders.

  • Prepare and submit legal briefs, petitions, and other documents to support clients' cases.


Training and Capacity Building:

  • Conduct training sessions and workshops for staff, partners, and beneficiaries on legal protection and rights.

  • Develop training materials and resources on legal issues and protection policies.

  • Provide ongoing mentoring and support to team members on legal matters.


Monitoring and Reporting:

  • Monitor the implementation of protection policies and programs.

  • Compile and analyze data on protection cases and trends.

  • Prepare reports on legal protection activities, outcomes, and challenges.


Coordination and Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with other departments, agencies, and organizations to coordinate protection efforts.

  • Participate in protection coordination meetings and networks.

  • Establish and maintain partnerships with legal aid organizations, law enforcement, and other relevant entities.


Policy Development and Advocacy:

  • Contribute to the development and review of protection policies and guidelines.

  • Advocate for legal reforms and policy changes to enhance protection mechanisms.

  • Engage in research and analysis on legal and protection issues.

Qualification, Experiences and Competencies

Education and Experience:

  • A degree in law (LLB or equivalent); a master's degree in law, human rights, or a related field is often preferred.

  • Admission to the bar or a legal practice license in the relevant jurisdiction.

  • Previous experience in legal practice, particularly in human rights, refugee law, or child protection, is highly beneficial.


Technical Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of national and international legal frameworks related to human rights and protection.

  • Proficiency in legal research and writing.

  • Ability to interpret and apply legal principles to complex cases.


Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills:

  • Ability to analyze legal issues and develop sound legal arguments.

  • Problem-solving skills to address complex protection challenges.


Communication Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to explain complex legal concepts in a clear and accessible manner.

  • Strong advocacy and negotiation skills.


Organizational and Time Management Skills:

  • Ability to manage multiple cases and projects simultaneously.

  • Strong organizational skills to maintain detailed case records and documentation.

  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.


Interpersonal Skills:

  • Empathy and the ability to work sensitively with vulnerable individuals.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships with clients, colleagues, and stakeholders.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team and in multicultural environments.
