Job Description
Enrolled Nurses (ENs), also known as Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) in some regions, play a crucial role in the healthcare system. Their duties and requirements vary depending on the country and the specific healthcare setting they work in, but generally, they are responsible for providing basic nursing care under the supervision of Registered Nurses (RNs) and other healthcare professionals.
Duties and Responsibilities
Basic Patient Care:
Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by physicians.
Monitor vital signs (e.g., blood pressure, pulse, temperature).
Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, eating, and toileting.
Change dressings and wound care.
Provide mobility assistance and help with exercises.
Clinical Tasks:
Collect samples for testing (e.g., blood, urine).
Perform basic diagnostic tests (e.g., urinalysis, blood glucose monitoring).
Assist in the preparation and administration of intravenous (IV) therapy.
Prepare and maintain sterile environments and equipment.
Patient Support:
Provide emotional support to patients and their families.
Educate patients about health maintenance and disease prevention.
Assist in developing and implementing patient care plans.
Documentation:
Maintain accurate and detailed patient records.
Document patient care and report any changes in patient conditions to RNs or physicians.
Collaboration:
Work as part of a healthcare team to ensure comprehensive patient care.
Communicate effectively with RNs, physicians, and other healthcare providers.
Emergency Care:
Provide basic life support (e.g., CPR) when necessary.
Assist in emergency situations and follow emergency protocols.
Qualification, Experiences and Competencies
Education:
Complete a recognized nursing program, typically a diploma or certificate course in practical or vocational nursing.
Courses usually cover subjects such as anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, nursing fundamentals, and clinical practice.
Licensing and Certification:
Pass a national licensing examination (e.g., NCLEX-PN in the United States) to become licensed.
Obtain additional certifications as required by the employer or region (e.g., CPR certification, IV therapy certification).
Skills:
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work well in a team.
Proficiency in clinical tasks and patient care techniques.
Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
Empathy and compassion for patients.
Experience:
Clinical experience gained through nursing education programs.
Some employers may prefer candidates with previous experience in a healthcare setting.
Physical and Emotional Stamina:
Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and work long shifts.
Emotional resilience to cope with the stresses and challenges of nursing.
Continued Education:
